Our Breeding Program
|
| Suncrest Farms
is a small breeding program, which means that every
horse is bred to its potential. We do not have the
funds to "experiment" breed and "hope" for a better
horse. We breed what we know will produce or perform
from proven bloodlines. |
| However, unconventionally, we do
breed a serious performance horse from the
Conclusive line crossed with the Thoroughbred or
Thoroughbred and Skipper W lines. Both the stud and
the mare have to be excellent movers. This outcross
came from watching similar crosses. We will not
breed any Impressive horses that are not great
movers, have temperament problems or are not N/N. |

|
If you pay attention to recent winners in the
Quarter Horse ring, many Impressive horses are
taking serious honors when properly bred for
performance. Our thinking is soon that line, crossed
properly, will produce a great cutting and reining
horse. We currently have a line bred Impressive
horse that exhibits more cow than some of the
cutting bred mares we have. We are already proving
them in the Dressage ring. |
| Horses here are raised in an
outside environment, but imprint trained upon birth
and handled daily. They are used to having to hold
still, being polite for the farrier, loading,
trailering regularly, having their heads played with
and used to farm equipment, road work and other
animals. We regularly move horses into other
environments to acclimate them. |
| Our feeding program consists of 90%
forage with supplementation. Our pastures, when
climate appropriate, are harrowed and mowed
regularly. Bands are rotated as often as possible.
All horses are on daily de-wormer. |
| Due to the geographic of the farm,
horses are used to crossing creeks, navigating
fences and finding herd mates. When started under
saddle we use a combination of methods from several
national trainers who advocate no resistance. They
are started bareback and in a halter. |
